Research your personal dwelling

This is vantage south apartment in Rhodes, it is a brand new apartment been built by the company ‘Meriton’. It’s an apartment very close to Rhodes shopping Centre, train station and the river. I just moved in for few weeks, but found the place very nice and comfortable to live at.

For 50 years, Meriton has been proudly developing, marketing and selling luxury apartments. Their services include: residential lasing, property finance, and property management, building management, strata management and dedicated maintenance teams. Meriton has the most successful residential developer, sold and leased over 60,000 apartments across Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

The Meriton we know it today faced lots of difficulties when it was a still unnamed company in 1968. The company was facing difficulties of selling two bedroom apartments for $9750. And in 1969 the company faced its largest development to date, 18 apartments in Meriton st, Gladesville.

Documenting contemporary subcultural style

Contemporary subcultural form has been referred to as hipster in North America, South America, Australia and Europe. It has been described as a “mutating tastes and behavior.”

I’ve chosen to revolve around hip-hop fashion on youth. Hip-hop fashion has always been a subculture since late 1970s till now; it is a distinctive style of dress originating from New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and etc. Hip-hop fashion complements the expressions and attitudes of hip-hop culture in general. Hip-hop fashion has changed significantly during its history, and today, it is across the whole world as a popular fashion.

In the photograph, those girls are dressed in hip-hop style clothes, they’re very easy to recognize, as the fashion are very unique. For contemporary hip-hop fashion, it’s all about crop tops and baggy pants also snapbacks and amazing hair color. For example the girl the on the left side have green colored hair. The fashion is been mixed with all the different kinds of colors, also the types of shoes are important.

This is one of the contemporary subculture styles, hip-hop fashion.

Powerhouse Museum object analysis

I’ve chosen to analyze this comfortable fit ‘Daydream’ corset. This corset has being placed in ‘What’s in the store’ exhibits, ‘the Wong family’ section.
By the late 1800s, shops had been transformed from the simplest form of goods, via markets and fairs to outlets and a range of items. This exhibition focuses on the experience of shopping in the city and the country, also looks at developments in marketing and display techniques and tells the story of the Wong family and their country general store.

Making clothing was usually cheaper than buying ready-made outfits. The Wong family store had a huge range of fabrics and accessories, as well as ready – made items.

Most Women wore laced corsets by 1920s. This ‘Daydream’ corset was probably made in Britain or Europe in 1900. It has relatively flexible bones stays to allow for greater movement, and it hold the body into a desired shape.

In the modern years, the term ‘corset’ has also been used in the fashion industry referring to tops which copy the look of traditional corsets without actually have its use anymore. The modern corsets often feature lacing and copies a historical style of corsets, they have very little of effect on the shape of the wearer’s body.

What is design history to me.

According to textbooks and websites, design history is the study of objects of design in their historical and stylistic contexts. But to me, design history is like a fantasy that have been written in the past few hundreds or even thousands of years earlier for our future generations to understand what is design and the important events occurred in the early design industry. It teaches us where all the design product (e.g sewing machine) came from and how they revolved from the most simple object to the ones we use now, and also the designers who created them. Design history is also a timeline to me that tells a lot of different stories for every certain year and it's importance. Design history contains the most fabulous, famous and successful designers in the world, and it tells you their life and everything about them. Overall, design history is about all the important events happened in the early years and the stories of the successful designers.
